From the opening window choose the "Create List" button. (or select "Create List" from the FILE MENU.
 
You will see the standard "Save File" dialog box. Name your spelling list. Navigate to the folder where you want it to be stored and click save. You will go immediately to the screen for creating a spelling list.
NOTE: Each word in the list is limited to 16 letters. Each separate list is limited to 30 total words.
Enter your first word in the edit field. Remember that words in Spell Tutor are case sensitive. (If you use a capital letter, the student must enter a capital letter to be counted correct.) When the word is correct, click the "Record" button or press <RETURN>. You will see a small window with buttons resembling those on a tape recorder.
 
Make sure that your sound input device is enabled and ready. Click the small record button. The rectangular box above "seconds" will begin to fill. Clearly speak the spelling word. Immediately click on the stop button. The "SAVE" button will now be enabled. To hear what you just recorded click on the play button. If you are not satisfied, you can re-record by clicking the record button again and repeating the process. When you are satisfied with the sound, click the "SAVE" button or press <RETURN>. This dialog box will disappear and you will be ready to enter the next word in the list. You will see all of the words in your current list in the window to the left of the screen. You may resize this window to take advantage of larger monitors. If the number of words exceeds the window length, the scroll button will appear.
Notes About Recording:
--> When speaking into the mic, you should see curved lines coming out of the speaker icon in the box above. If not, your mic is not properly connected or the volume is not set loud enough.
--> The small number at the right side of the "seconds" rectangle above (:44) shows the maximun seconds available for recording each sound. It will vary depending upon the amount of RAM available.
--> The darker numbers (:00) indicate seconds used for this sound. Use as little time as possible so as to conserve memory. This is done by speaking soon after clicking record and clicking stop immediately after finishing the sound. Most words should take no more than :01 second. If you need to leave a definition, it may take slightly longer. If you end up with too much silence, just re-record.
--> Clicking cancel will take you to the next word, but leave no recording for that sound. If you should do this accidentally, see below for how to edit a word (and change the sound).
Ending the List:
NOTE: Your list has been automatically saved as you entered the words. The resource file to hold your recordings of the words was also automatically created.
When you are finished entering words, click the "Done" button. You will be returned to the starting screen. From here you can create another list, open a previous test, take a test, or quit Spell Tutor. If you enter 30 words, you will return to the starting screen upon trying to enter the 31st word.
NOTE: You should always leave the create list window by clicking on "Done." Leaving by choosing "Quit" from the FILE MENU will bring up a dialog advising you that the current list will NOT be saved.
Editing a Word:
To change a previous word while still creating the list, click on that word in the window to the left of the screen. That word is automatically entered into the edit field. Make any changes to the word or type a brand new word. When you click the "Record" button, or press <RETURN>, you are asked if you wish to change the recorded sound for this word. Choose "yes" or "no", re-record the sound as above if "yes", and the word is now changed in the window to the left.
